After steam-rolling by Cleveland (4-1), Chicago (4-0), and Orlando (4-1), the Pistons have made it to their fourth consecutive NBA Finals appearance, only days before the San Antonio Spurs advanced past the Phoenix Suns. This puts the San Antonio Spurs against the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Finals for the third consecutive year. How can two teams dominate a sport for so long? The masterminds behind the teams have built together two power-houses that are simply dominating the league. In all actuality, no team comes close to the Pistons or Spurs, and these two clubs have found ways to continue to win and better their team while the rest of the league is being left far behind. When asked how he felt about his success as GM of the Pistons, Hunter said,
"It's really been great. I'm proud of this group of guys who have played their hearts out day in and day out. I can only do part of the job, the players and coaches should get most of the credit. I'm actually really happy about the maturity and level of determination I sense among these guys. I believe when they put all they have on the floor, no one can beat them."
The Pistons head coach, Flip Saunders, scheduled a shoot-around practice Sunday afternoon, the day after beating the Orlando Magic at the Palace. Although it wasn't a mandatory practice and was scheduled to be a light shoot-around, every single player on the Pistons roster showed up and, while Saunders and Hunter were discussing possible scenarios for what lay ahead, decided to run a normal practice.
"This just shows the maturity and motivation this group of guys have. They want it pretty badly this year," said Saunders.
"Well we don't want to be rusty or out of shape come game day. You can bet we will be working hard everyday and every game," said reigning Finals MVP Kevin Garnett.
The Pistons fly out to San Antonio Wednesday morning. Game 1 of the NBA Finals is Thursday at 8:00 PM EST.
